Share a Slice of Your Summer
With the close of another school year, for those with the traditional school track, and summer planning taking place for families and their school age children, I want share some nuggets of truths.
I recently spent time passing out food to homeless families. What stuck with me most were the faces of children going through the food and clothing line as if it was the norm. I am sure for right now that line and some other line of support is their “normal” possibly a “new normal” as the director of Food on Foot (http://www.foodonfoot.org/) adamantly mentioned, so many could be right here at any given moment. I shutter to think of that but let that truth be known.
Thank goodness the sun is shinning in Los Angeles. Maybe the little girl I remember so vividly, will not be too cold in the day or night and she will know her summer has begun. I doubt if her family will plan a trip even if for free to a park or a public pool area to enjoy the fact that schools out for summer! But I hope they do.
For those of us fortunate enough to bask in our days of a good, safe roof over our head, food at our disposal and enough change in our pocket for a nice cold Slurpee, I encourage you to remind yourself and your children to not only be very very thankful for what they have but to find one place in their town/community to serve a homeless family with a smile so big that it out shines the sun! Bring summer to the family with passes to a movie theater or a gift card to a restaurant like Subway, McDonalds or a buffet style eatery. Remember a family especially with kids needs doable accommodations.
So here’s to unity in family. To the spirit of gratitude and the ability to share summer with your “new normal” – those more fortunate than others.
